THE REMAINS OF BENTENMISAKI -FORT

At the end of the Edo period under pressure from Western powers¡¢ the Tokugawa Shogunate had Ezochi (Hokkaido) put under the direct control again.
In 1854 Takeuchi Shimotsuke-no-kami and Hori-Oribe-no-sho¡¢ who were Hakodate Bugyo (commissioners) at that time¡¢ submitted a report on the defence of Hakodate to the Shogunate. Accordingly¡¢ the Bentenmisaki-Fort plan was set forth.
In 1856 Fort construction was started at the estimated cost of 100¡¢000 ryo in one corner of present Hakodate Dock.

It was designed and the construction was directed by Takeda Ayasaburo¡¢ who also designed Goryokaku.
The irregular hexagon shaped fort¡¢ 684 meters in circumference¡¢ about 32¡¢340 square meters¡¢ was completed in 1864.

The Fort was actually used for warlike purposes during the Hakodate Battle.
Exiles of the Tokugawa Shogunate occupied the Fort and engaged in artillery duel with the Imperial Forces¡¢ but were defeated. On May 15 in 1869¡¢ the besieged chief¡¢ Hakodate Bugyo Nagai Genba and all his 240 men surrendered. Later the Military Ministry had jurisdiction over Benten Fort (Benten Battery).
In 1896¡¢ It was reclaimed for the construction of harbor improvement.
Now the shape of this fort can not be seen.¡¡¡¡CITY OF HAKODATE
