People considered it the finest garden in Hakodate and enjoyed the seasonal flowers.

The place Kosai¡¢ meaning plain food¡¢ was named by Ayazaburo Takeda¡¢who studied Western sciences in the Dutch language and designed and supervised the Goryokaku.

In 1869 when the Imperial Army set out from Shinagawa Port during the Hakodate battle¡¢ the governor of the Shogunate Army Takeaki Enomoto and his 600 men spent their last night before their death in Kosaien on March 14.
