真言寺と不動明王立像

真言寺は，文久年間（１８６１年〜１８６４年），僧 寛純により創立されたといわれる。この寺の主仏である不動明王は日常開帳されていない。高さ３６センチメートルの木彫の仏像で，作者・制作年代は不詳であるが相当古く立派なものであり，市の文化財に指定されている。当時は盛り場が近くにあり，花柳界その他の人々から不動明王の寺として信仰を集めたという。　　函館市

THE SHINGONJI TEMPLE AND THE STATUE OF FUDOMYOO

　The Shingonji Temple is said to have been established during the Bunkyu years (1861〜1864)by a priest namedKanjun．

　The temples main image of Buddha is the statue of Fudomyoo and is not normally exhibited. The wooden statue is 36 centimeters tall.

　Although its author and the exact year of production are ot known, it is regarded as considerably old and is skillfully crafted. The statue is designated as an important ultural property of the city.

　There used to be a gay quarter nearby and the temple with Fudomyoo was widely worshipped by the people in the society of geisha and others alike. CITY OF HAKODATE
