明治天皇上陸記念碑

函館市観光標識

赤御影石の地球儀の上に、青銅の鳳凰が羽を広げた碑は、明治天皇が明治９（１８７６）年、東北・北海道巡幸で来函の際、旧税関桟橋への上陸を記念したものである。同１４年に再び来道の際、小樽から陸路函館へ巡幸し、ここから乗船して青森へ向かった。　明治９年の下船・乗船と同１４年の乗船で、計３回となることから、三蹤碑（さんしょうひ）とも呼ばれている。この碑は、函館出身の彫刻家梁川剛一の作で、昭和１０（１９３５）年９月７日に除幕された。同１６年に７月２０日を「海の記念日」と定めたのは、明治天皇の明治９年の巡幸の際、７月１８日に離函し、２０日に横浜に帰着したことを記念したものである。平成８（１９９６）年から国民の祝日「海の日」となった。　　函館市

MONUMENT OF EMPEROR MEIJI'S LANDING

This monument、 a bronze Chinese phoenix spreading its wings on a red granite globe、 commemorates Emperor Meiji's visit to Hakodate in 1876 when he landed at the pier of Hakodate's former customhouse、 during his visit of the Tohoku and Hokkaido Areas. In 1881 when Emperor Meiji paid another visit to Hokkaido、 he first landed in Otaru、 made a tour of the island then left by ship from Hakodate to Aomori. The monument has also been called Sansyo-hi meaning three happy visits referring to the three times Emperor Meiji visited this pier、 i.e. 、 disembarking and boarding the ship in 1876、 and once again boarding the ship in 1881. The monument was engraved by Yanagawa Goichi、 who was born in Hakodate、 and was unveiled on September 7、 1935. On July 20、 1941 Sea Memorial Day was established in commemoration of Emperor Meiji's cruise、 leaving Hakodate on July 18 and arriving safely in Yokosuka on July 20、 Since 1996、 this day has been designated as a National Holiday、 Marine Day. 　　CITY OF HAKODATE
