　函館の水道は、明治２２年（１８８９年）に完成した日本で二番目の近代水道である。日本最初の水道は横浜で、これは外国人の設計監督により明治２０年（１８８７年）に完成した。日本人の工事監督によるものとしては、函館の水道が日本で最初のものであり全国的に有名である。函館は昔から水利の便が悪く、また津軽海峡に突き出た地形のため年間を通して風が強く、火災が発生するとたちまち大火となり、多くの犠牲者がでたこと、さらに明治１９年（１８８６年）市内にコレラが大流行し、８４２人に及ぶ市民が死亡したことなどが契機となって、水道建設の要望が一層高まり、明治２１年（１８８８年）念願の一大事業が着工された。　ここは、創設の時つくられた配水池がある「元町配水場」で、市街地北側にある赤川の高区浄水場から１１Ｋｍの送水管によりこの配水場に送られてきた水を市内西部地区に供給している。　函館の水道施設は、創設から６回にわたる拡張工事を行い・現在３０万人の函館市民に清浄な水を供給している。　　函館市

Hakodate waterworks was completed in 1889 and the second in Japan. The first waterworks was in Yokohama、 and was designed and supervised by foreigners in 1887. Hakodate's waterworks is famous because it was designed and constructed by the Japanese for the first time. Before 1889、 Hakodate's public water system had not been the best. Hakodate is located on the Tsugaru strait. The winds that blow off the strait have caused many disastrous fires. Many people lost their lives fighting these fires. In 1886、 842 people died of cholera、 which caused a cry from the people for a new waterworks to be built in 1888. The distributing reservoir in Motomachi supplies water to the west area of Hakodate through a 11 kilometerwaterpipe、 from the Akagawa filtration plant at the north of the urban area. Hakodate's water service has had six extensions and now supplies about 300、 000 citizens with clear water. 　　CITY OF HAKODATE
