GOKOKU JINJA SHRINE ¡¡ In 1869 after the Battle of Hakodate¡¢ the Japanese military administration constructed Shokonjo as an invocational place to honor the spirits of Imperial soldiers who died in the war. The big stone engraved Shokonjo in this shrine yard records this history. In 1874 Shokonjo was renamed Shokonsha¡¢ and in 1939 Shokonsha was renamed Gokoku Jinja Shrine. This existing Shinto Shrine was completed in 1942¡¢ and here are enshrined the war dead from the Battle of Hakodate¡¢ the Satsuma Rebellion¡¢ the Sino-Japanese War¡¢ the Russo-Japanese War and World War ­¶. There are tombs and a cenotaph of the Imperial forces in the precinct. ¡¡¡¡CITY OF HAKODATE
