　明治２（１８６９）年、箱館戦争が終わって、兵部省は新政府側の戦没者を慰霊するために、招魂場を造営した。境内に「招魂場」という大石があるのは、その時のものである。　同７年に招魂社となり、昭和１４（１９３９）年に護国神社となった。　現在の社殿は昭和１７年に完成したものである。　ここには、箱館戦争以降、西南の役、日清戦争から第二次世界大戦に至るまでの、戦没者の霊が祀られている。境内には新政府側戦没者の墓や慰霊碑などがある。　　函館市

GOKOKU JINJA SHRINE 　 In 1869 after the Battle of Hakodate、 the Japanese military administration constructed Shokonjo as an invocational place to honor the spirits of Imperial soldiers who died in the war. The big stone engraved Shokonjo in this shrine yard records this history. In 1874 Shokonjo was renamed Shokonsha、 and in 1939 Shokonsha was renamed Gokoku Jinja Shrine. This existing Shinto Shrine was completed in 1942、 and here are enshrined the war dead from the Battle of Hakodate、 the Satsuma Rebellion、 the Sino-Japanese War、 the Russo-Japanese War and World War Ⅱ. There are tombs and a cenotaph of the Imperial forces in the precinct. 　　CITY OF HAKODATE
