八幡坂（はちまんざか）

基坂上の箱館奉行所付近にあった八幡宮が，文化元年（１８０４年）奉行所の拡張工事に伴い，この坂の上に移されたことからこの名が付いた。八幡宮は明治１１年（１８７８年）の火災によって焼失し，明治１３年に現在の谷地頭町に移った。

HACHIMAN ZAKA SLOPE

Hachimangu, a Shinto shrine once built at the top of Motoizaka slope where Hakodate Bugyo's (commissioner's) building was located, had to be moved to the top of Hachimanzaka slope due to the expansion of the Bugyo Office in 1804, so they named the slope 'Hachiman Zaka. ' Hachimangu Shrine, hovever, was destructed by fire in 1878 and the shrine was moved again to Yachigashira cho in 1880. CITY OF HAKODATE
