NIJUKKEN ZAKA SLOPE
Once there lived many carpenters and craftsmen around here, and this slope was also called 'Daiku machi Zaka' (meaning a slope in a carpenters'town) . Hakodate has had numerous disastrous fires and after the great fire of 1879 this slope was designed as a fire prevention belt, and thus was widened by nijukken (about. thirty-six meters) . This name is thus derived from the width of the slope and has been called such by Hakodate citizens since then. CITY OF HAKODATE
