Tanka Monuments to Miyazaki Ikuu and Sunayama Kageji
    Miyazaki Ikuu

Miyazaki Ikuu (real name Miyazaki Daishiro) was born in Niigata prefecture in 1885. Shortly afterwards, his family moved to Hakodate and his father started a miso factory. Miyazaki became a staff member of the literary group “Bokushukusha” which was formed in 1906. Ishikawa Takuboku came to Hakodate in 1907, and Miyazaki kindly supported Ishikawa both financially and spiritually. In 1909, he married Fukiko, a sister of Ishikawa’s wife Setsuko.
Even after he succeeded his father’s business he continued writing poetry and passed away in 1962. The tanka (poem) here is from the second chapter “Jimon Jito”, (Ask yourself and then answer yourself), in “Ikuu Kashu”, a collection of his work published posthumously. This monument was erected by Hakodate Toshorikai (an association of book lovers) in 1968.
    Sunayama Kageji
Sunayama Kageji (real name Nakano Torao) was actively engaged in the literary magazine “Gin no Tsubo” (a silver pot) which was first published in 1918. He was an ardent admirer of Ishikawa Takuboku and his poems, and we can find Nishikawa’s influence in Sunayama’s work. He had a skeptical outlook on life and committed suicide in 1921 by leaping from the Aomori-Hakodate ferry. He was 20 years old.
This tanka is found in the preamble of “Botchan no Kashu” (The collection of a boy’s poem), and this monument was built by Kaikyohyoronsha (Kaikyo Reviews) and Hakodate Toshorikai (an association of book lovers) in 1968.
