   Commodore Perry’s Interview Location
In March 1854 Commodore Matthew C. Perry of the U.S.Navy concluded the Treaty of Peace and Amity with the Tokugawa shogunate in Kanagawa. Soon afterwards he visited Hakodate with his fleet of five ships. In Hakodate, Perry met with Matsumae Kageyu (the chief retainer of the Matsumae clan) and other officials at the house of Yamadaya Juhei, an influential merchant. This illustration, from Perry’s “Expedition to Japan”, depicts the meeting.
After spending time in the city and conducting a survey of the harbor, Perry left Hakodate.
